Rudy crept and walked. His eyes sparkled with joy ashe firmly placed his iron-tipped mountain shoes; it seemed as ifhe wished to leave behind him an impression of each footstep. Thepatches of black earth, tossed onto the glacier by the mountaintorrents, gave it a burned look, but still the blue-green, glassyice shone through. They had to circle the little pools thatseemed damned up by detached masses of ice. On this route theyapproached a huge stone which was balanced on the edge of an icecrevasse. Suddenly the rock lost its balance and toppled into thecrevasse; the echo of its thunderous fall resounded faintly fromthe deep abyss of the glacier, far, far below.

He flung his arms about her and gazed into hermarvelously clear eyes. It was only for a second, but how canthat second be expressed or described in words? Was it the lifeof the soul or the life of death that took possessions of hisbeing? Was he carried up high, or did he sink down into the deepand deathly icy crevasse, deeper, always deeper? He beheld theice walls shining like blue-green glass; bottomless crevassesyawned about him; the waters dripped, sounding like the chimes ofbells, and were as clear as a pearl glowing with pale blueflames. Then the Ice Maiden kissed him - a kiss that sent an icyshiver through his whole body. He gave a cry of pain, torehimself away from her, stumbled, and fell; all went dark beforehis eyes, but he opened them again. The powers of evil had playedtheir game. 2ff7e9595c
